problem #7

Genesis 3.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 51,500 miles

I have a 2015 Genesis, I got in it Monday and even with the key fob in my pocket, it said it there was no key present. I took it out of my pocket and the car started. On Tuesday, I went to an appointment, came back and the car would not start upon pushing the start button, the radio and lights came on, but failed to start. I pushed the start button and it failed to turn off, after pushing over and over it finally started. On Wed I got in the car and it once again failed to start, the lights and radio came on but would not start.

Any ideas?

Genesis Luxury 3.8L

I have a 2015 Hyundai Genesis Sedan. Major problem I am facing right now is that when I go to turn off the car by pushing the start button, the car starts turning off, but almost immediately completely shuts down. And I mean COMPLETE Electrical shut down. Absolutely nothing works after that. Can't start the car back up, nor use any of the electrical functions. Even the key stops working.

This problem happens a few times a week, but certainly not every time. Which makes it more frustrating because the service guys at Hyundai think I'm crazy since they cant find anything wrong with the car.

The ONLY thing I have found that brings the car back to life, is a sudden impact to the car (such as slamming the car door closed, or slamming the hood of the car down). Anything that shakes the car enough. Once I do that, everything comes back on (I can start the car again, the clock spins a bunch of times until it finds the correct time, the trip meters are set back to 0 km, the air conditioning is at full blast, etc) . This has brought me to suspect that there is a loose contact somewhere.

Going in for service on Tuesday, but I have no idea if they will find the problem.

Update from Mar 12, 2019: So update on this in case anyone is having the same issue

For my, it was weird because whenever I had a solid impact to the car, like slamming the door firmly, the power would come back on. Nobody could understand why.

Eventually, a CAA Mechanic checked the battery in the trunk of the car, and found that the screws that held some of the wire connections to the battery had come loose on their own (maybe from vibration of the car or something. ). So sometimes when I would stop my car and turn off my car, if the wire wasn't making a connection with the battery, everything would die instantly. How to download bmw software update. I guess shutting my door hard would shake the wire into place sometimes and the connection would be made again. I haven't had a problem since and its been about2 years now. Simple solution, but check those connections and make sure they all the screws are fastened tightly to the battery.

Genesis AWD 3.8L

Had a new battery installed by dealer on 5/25/17, took car home and next day went to store, hit ignition button to turn off car and everything went dead. No lights, nothing, car would not start again. A minute or so later, the clock reset to 12:00 and about 30 seconds later, clock reset to correct time and was able to start it up. Air conditioner came on on high, back sunshade came up, dash display reset. Happened four more times before I could get it to dealer. They kept it for five hours but said they could not replicate the problem, so took the car home. Has happened three more times since and will take it back again. Seems like, if I open the car door (as mentioned in one complaint) the clock will usually reset almost immediately to 12:00.

Update from Jun 30, 2017: Took car in for second time to dealer, this time along with video I had recorded of what happened. Showed video to serviceman and they kept it overnight. Eventually , using test light, he verified no power to underwood fuse block. Found power lead from battery to under hood block securing nut loose causing open conditions when moved around. Resecured power lead and no problems since.

My Genesis is less than 6 months old, has fewer than 4,000 miles. Was in Woodstock, NY for the July 4th weekend and it would start-- no electrical function at all. Had to use manual key to open doors and trunk. No dealers open on holiday (not unreasonable). I had to leave the car, however and return to NYC. Ruined my weekend. Roadside assistance will only pay to tow to next town. Or charge me $495 to tow to NYC area where I live and my dealer is. Consumer Affairs unable to escalate the issue. Couldn't give me phone number for VP of Consumer affairs in CA (only mailing address). Called head of PR, and his VM box was full (no wonder with such sub-par customer service.)

1) Need to know what the heck is the problem. Based on your site, this seems to have happened frequently.

2) Want to warn folks that Genesis, while a great looking car, is a sub-standard luxury brand in the way it treats its customers. And apparently the great looking cars are dangerously unreliable.

Genesis R-Spec 3.8L

  • Manual transmission
  • 6,835 miles

Happened 3 times in the last month.

1st: Car was ok in the morning, went to work ok but didn't start at 6pm to leave the job. There was power in the car, radio, lights and air working. I had to call the road assistance. 20min later I tried to restart the car. It worked..

2nd: Last week, 7am, car didn't start to go to work.. waited 30 min like last time and it started.

3rd: Sunday 10am, car didn't start again.. took the second car because I had no time to waist. Called the road assistance and the guy said: 'We see that often on Genesis. Even if it's new. You have to push more than more the clutch and keep the key turned even if it's 45 seconds. Keep going untill it starts'. WHAT??!!

I just called the dealer and they said there is maybe a problem with the chip in the key. Appointment tomorrow.

Genesis Ultra

  • Automatic transmission
  • 6,200 miles

2015 Genesis 6200 miles. Went to start the car .. pushed the start button and heard what sounded like electrical shorts coming from the dashboard. The car started but it was certainly a much different start. Drove the car about 6 miles, parked and went to a meeting came out an hour later. The car was DEAD. Nothing worked .. completely dead. The red blinking alarm light was off .. nothing worked.

About 90 minuted later went back outside to the car and the power was back on. The car started as usual and is working fine now.

Obviously, very insecure to drive the car to far from home .. I feel this issue is going to come up again.

Any suggestions as to what might be happening and how to fix?

Update from Feb 18, 2016: Here's the latest. Took to Hyundai dealership to try and fix the 'not starting' issue and 'dead' electrical car from time to time. Did not got to dealership where I bought the car (200 miles away). The dealership is telling me the problem may be linked to an after market 'alarm system' that was installed at the dealership. Apparently, some dealers install the alarm on all cars. So, if you want it you pay for it if you don't they disconnect it. Frankly, I don;t remember a discussion about an alarm (doesn't matter). Now the dealer wants me to pay $100+/- to disconnect the alarm and it should work fine. I'll report back if this in fact fixes the issues.

Update from Feb 22, 2016: Soooo .. the Hyundai dealership disconnected the 'after market' alarm. The car starts perfectly! It has never started like it does now! No hesitation .. fires immediately, whereas before it almost sounded like a failing battery with the start hesitating. BlueLink works perfectly. I might add the dealership was really great in trying to diagnose the issue and did. Therefore, if you're having starting issues or electrical issues ask about this after market alarm .. removal of the after market alarm seems to have solved all of my issues.

Update from Jun 22, 2016: Now I have 13,500 miles on my Genesis .. no issues whatsoever! Just an update.

There are a number of issues that can go wrong with starting system and make your 2009 Hyundai Genesis car won’t start or hard time to start – This article guides you through some of the facts behind the starting system, and the components that may be to blame, and tells you what action you can take to try to remedy each situation.

No lights on the 2009 Hyundai Genesis dashboard

If no lights coming on in the dashboard and no other electrical consumers work, the battery could be completely dead or there is no connection between the battery and the vehicle electrical system. Check if the battery terminals look tight. If the battery is completely dead, jump starting might help.https://www.netcarshow.com/hyundai/2009-i20_blue/

2009 Hyundai Genesis the key won’t turn in the ignition

If the key won’t turn in the ignition, it could be for a couple of reasons: Often this happens when the steering is locked by the ignition lock with the front wheels turned aside or when one of the front wheels is pushed against something. In this case, try turning the steering wheel left and right while gently jiggling the ignition key – this might help to release the steering lock.

2009 Hyundai Genesis No Start, No Sound, No Crank when you turn the key in the ignition:

If nothing happens when you turn the ignition key to the “Start” position, it means that the starter motor doesn’t turn over the engine. Most commonly this could be caused by a low/dead battery or there is no connection between the battery and starter.

Check the battery and the terminal cable connections. If they look really corroded, you need to clean the battery posts and cable connectors or replace the cables and try to start the engine. Also check the starter. The solenoid attached to the top of the starter can fail, as well as the components inside. Replace starter solenoid, starter contacts, starter assembly or repair starter circuit as required.

The 2009 Hyundai Genesis car makes a clicking noise but won’t start:

If you turn the key to the “Start” position, but the engine won’t crank; all you hear is a single click or repeated clicking coming from the engine compartment. Very often this could be caused by a low battery or poor connection between the battery and starter.

The 2009 Hyundai Genesis engine cranks over but won’t start:

There are many possible causes, but we know it is neither a battery nor a starter problem. Just remember: a vehicle will always require air, fuel, and the ignition to operate.

Check the fuel. You may be out of fuel, or the fuel isn’t getting to your engine. If the wrong amount of fuel is being injected into the combustion chamber, or being injected at the wrong time, the engine will not start. Again, this will be a case where the engine cranks over, but will not actually run. This could be caused by a few different parts including the fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel injectors, and fuel lines. Some of those options are a stretch, but do have an effect on the system. Start with the fuel injectors, and make sure they are clean.

If it’s not a fuel problem, the electrical spark isn’t getting through to the spark plugs. Check the spark. Without spark to ignite the fuel mix in the combustion chamber, the engine will not start. It will turn over or “crank over” but will never actually run. Spark issues are not limited to the plugs. Check the spark plug wires, the distributor or module, and plug gap. These all have a huge effect on the function of the ignition system.
