May 17, 2010  2005 Toyota Tacoma 6 Speed Manual tranny 5 speeds fine, reverse is all the way over to the left and up. It has always been tricky getting it in R. Now when I bring the stick all the way to the left it just seems to fall into a void with about 6'-10' of play and no reverse. I just found this forum and glad I did. A lot of good info here. I seem to have the same problem a few of you are having with tranny shifting on the tacoma. When I come to a stop the transmission will not downshift to first gear until I take my foot off the brake. Also, it stays in 2nd until 30 mph unless the engine is hot. Jun 12, 2004  No Reverse!! ('93 Camry) So I park my car in a parking space and go into a shop for a few minutes. I come back out, turn my car on, put it into reverse, and lightly step on the gas. The Engine revs, the car goes nowhere just like it is in neutral. So I shift into drive, go forward an inch. Drive is apparently fine. Back to reverse and still. My '01 DC Tacoma with 3.4L autotrans will not shift into drive when cold. The shifter goes through reverse goes into Drive but the transmission does not engage drive. If I let off the brakes, the truck inches along, regardless of throttle input. No weird noises or odors. Transmission fluid is at good level. Nov 21, 2010 Toyota calls for 75w90 and if you use 80w90 or heavier oil that will also cause hard shifting issues most noticeable when cold. Another cause for this kind of complaint is a clutch that does not release properly. A warped clutch disc or sometimes a master cylinder will bypass slightly causing the clutch to drag just a bit. 2005 Toyota Tacoma 6 Speed Manual tranny 5 speeds fine, reverse is all the way over to the left and up. Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2013 Toyota Tacoma 1

When coming to an abrupt stop, the transmission will slip into neutral and will not reengage first gear until the engine reaches 1. 5k rpm and jolting the truck forward. The truck will then not shift into fifth gear and the traction control off warning light comes on until the truck has been shut off.

After going in reverse then stopping and placing the vehicle in drive, the transmission will slip, I would accelerate but the vehicle does nothing but rev up and then it will finally engage.

Safety issue - when starting cold and engaging reverse, the truck sometimes fails to engage the reverse gear causing a delay of 3-6 seconds, then engages suddenly causing truck to surge in reverse. This surge could cause a safety issue for any pedestrians behind the vehicle as well as possibility of backing into something. Transmission seems to slip. Took it to molle Toyota in kansas city who reports this as normal.

Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2016 Toyota Tacoma 5

Windshield cracked 2 weeks after purchasing the truck. Had to pay $500 deductible through my insurance, windshield from Toyota cost $1,000. Next issue is my transmission slipping when shifting from reverse to drive. Took it into the dealership and they found the transmission to be low, they topped it off and it's still lagging when shifting. Miss the engine in my 2012 2nd gen. Come on Toyota!!!!.

Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2016 Toyota Tacoma 6

Transmission slips when cold or after the truck sits for an hour or two. Usually always occurs when starting the vehicle up, reversing and then going into drive. The transmission has a partial engagement but acceleration is not as intended. It will then 'bang' into to gear and go. Fear is that if you back out of your driveway and intend to accelerate, the truck may not move as intended thus creating a safety hazard. For a new vehicle, there should not be any slippage once shifted into drive. Yesterday I had it where the slipping lasted three seconds before it finally went fully into gear. My truck has 1650 miles on it and it's done this since the day it was new. I would say I've experienced this at least 70+ times during cold starts at home or at work. Also concerned about the wear on the transmission's internals due to this partial engagement of a forward gear.

Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2009 Toyota Tacoma 7

2009 Toyota Tacoma automatic transmission slippage while trying to accelerate from low speed. This occurs after slowing down to between 5 and 10 mph. When you try to accelerate the engine revs up between 500 and 2000 rpm but the vehicle does not accelerate. I reported this shortly after I purchased the vehicle and the service manager said it was a known issue and all the Tacoma transmissions did this and it was normal. The issue still occurs and I have asked the dealer if Toyota has a fix for it every time I take the vehicle in for service and I am told there is no fix and the transmission is working correctly even though the service advisor said he get numerous complaints from other Tacoma owner. This could be a serious problem if it happens while driving and I am unable to accelerate to avoid an emergency situation.

Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2010 Toyota Tacoma 8

My 2010 Toyota Tacoma engine try to accelerate by it self while stop at a red light. My wife held her foot on the brake to keep it from running into the intersection the tire were spinning while it was sitting still. Also my transmission seems to slip when I give it gas between 8 to 12 mph. I told the Toyota dealer about it he said that he hasn't received any reports from Toyota on these two problems he didn't seem to interested in my problem.

While slowing and making right or left turns, my 2010 Tacoma v-6 4x2 automatic transmission will slip into either neutral or first gear for several seconds (typically 2 or 3). Engine rpm increase and then transmission shifts into the correct gear with a lurch. This defect makes left turns, across traffic, especially difficult and dangerous, since you never know if it will happen and how long it will take to hunt for and find the 'right' gear. I first notice the issue after driving about 75 miles (have a little over 800 miles now). Been to dealer twice. Demonstrated problem with service manager in the truck. He had no solution for the problem. He 'hopes' Toyota will come out with a fix. Toyota has a similar defect with the 2009 Tacomas and issued on November 3, 2009 technical service bulletin t-sb-0373-09. But TSB only eliminated the defect in the 2009 model. Does not address 2010 trucks. This defect needs to be resolved quickly before someone get injured.

Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2010 Toyota Tacoma 11

While slowing to 10-12 mph my 2010 Tacoma v-6 4x4 's automatic transmission will slip into what seems to be neutral for about 2-3 seconds. Engine rpm's will rise to about 2500-3000 rpm's before transmission re-engages. This situation has nearly gotten me involved in 5 accidents. I first noticed the problem when the vehicle had about 150 miles on it. The problem seems to occur when you slow for either a left or right turn or when you slow to 10-12 mph and then try to resume power . Vehicle has been to selling dealer 3 times to have this issue resolved but has not been fixed. Dealers transmission mechanic went for a test drive with me and this condition was duplicated within 5 minutes. Toyota customer service has been notified and so far no fix has been forthcoming. This is a very dangerous condition and could cause a very serious accident.

Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2009 Toyota Tacoma 12

In August of 2009 I purchased a new Toyota Tacoma. After a week or so I noticed that the automatic transmission was not responsive and slipped when you decelerate than accelerate. The transmission slips and stalls the vehicle while it tries to find an appropriate gear to move forward. I took it to the dealer and the tech said this is normal for new Tacoma's. This is a hazardand will get somebody killed because you cannot merge into traffic under these conditions.

Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2009 Toyota Tacoma 13

I recently purchased a 2010 Toyota Tacoma with a 5-speed automatic transmission. When I slow down for a right turn (or brake for any other reason) and then accelerate, the transmission seems to slip into neutral and fails to respond for a second or two. This problem makes merging into moving traffic very hazardous. When I went to my Toyota dealer to have the problem fixed, I was told that this was 'normal' for the 2009 and 2010 Tacoma and no repair was available.

Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2009 Toyota Tacoma 14

Purchased 2009 Toyota Tacoma crewcab in July 2009. I immediately began to notice when driving that the transmission gearing was not correct. When decelerating to make a turn or after coming to complete stop followed by acceleration, the transmission slips and struggles to find the correct gear for the speed the vehicle is traveling.

Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2009 Toyota Tacoma 15

My new 2009 Toyota prerunner transmission randomly slips (delays) when going from 1st to 2nd gear. I first noticed it at 150 miles. I haven't been able to establish a definite pattern, except it happens when accelerating from speeds below 10mph. I now have 1500 miles on the odometer and it still slips randomly and continuously. I'm afraid that one day I'm going to try to enter traffic and my transmission is going to slip and I'm going to have someone run into me or cause an accident. Toyota has told me this is a 'normal' thing. Nothing has been done about it. I was told it has something to do with the computer/emissions/and other components, working together for better gas mileage (which by the way is not all that great) and it is normal. In other words, nothing is wrong and nothing needs to be fixed, it's supposed to that. It seems to me that the transmission randomly slipping is not something that is supposed to happen.

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that the transmission slipped between first and second gear and also lunged forward at times. The vehicle lunged forward and almost caused her to hit pedestrians and other vehicles. The failure was intermittent. The vehicle was taken to a dealer on two occasions. A technician stated that it was a characteristic of the vehicle and that there was nothing that they would be able to do. The manufacturer backed up the dealer's explanation. The current mileage was approximately 2,600. The failure mileage was 161. Bl.

Continual problem. Vehicle transmission slips/disengages during or prior to acceleration, primarily after turning a corner. As a result the engine revs and then the transmission engages causing vehicle to lurch/surge sometimes uncontrollably. 'shift logic' control was reset by dealer on 03/23/09 but did not correct situation. Problem has existed since vehicle purchase 03/02/09. Vehicle has 470 miles.

Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2009 Toyota Tacoma 19

Transmission slips, engine races and goes into gear. Sporadic and unreliable actions, sometimes causes wheel spin. Manufacturer claims all new vehicles perform this way and refuses to fix. Independent mechanic verified my concern and stated it is a safety hazard.

Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2007 Toyota Tacoma 20

My Toyota pu, when stopping, will occasionally either have the accelerator stick or the transmission not disengage, causing me to have to shift the transmission into neutral to allow the brakes to stop the truck. I have discussed numerous times with the dealer and the main office in CA without any results. They claim that it has to happen every time before they can fix it. My contention is that I will end up in an accident if I have to wait until it happens every time. Until the dealer suggested I shift into neutral, I was trying to have the brakes overcome the engine torque to stop the truck. Of the four times this has happened over the last four months, the engine actually died due to the brakes stopping the truck while the automatic transmission was still trying to drive the truck forward. Twice the transmission slipped into its idle state by itself during my stopping and once I shifted into neutral so I could stop the truck. The manager of northhills Toyota has refused to discuss this with me after my leaving three messages.
